We value and respect the environment that we work in and carefully consider the environmental aspects of using timber.

Timber Windows

Since the last war timber windows have been perceived as having a short life with high maintenance, yet the truth is that there are thousands of Victorian windows still in use. George Barnsdale & Sons design and manufacture timber windows that are delivered fully finished and glazed which with minimum maintenance will outlast all other options. Our timber windows are made from renewable and sustainable sources and have a minimum impact on global warming.

FSC & PEFC

We have carried out considerable research on the different factors effecting the performance and environmental issues and believe that we have the best compromise. All our casement windows and all of our sashes are normally made from finger-jointed redwood heartwood which we purchase directly from Finland. We also manufacture products using high quality timber which carries the FSC & PEFC chain of custody. This means that our timber is sourced from well managed and sustainable sources.

BSW Accoya

We are one of the first companies to use BSW Accoya timber which has the durability and stability found in the best performing tropical hardwoods, yet is completely non-toxic and made using plantation, FSC approved timber . It is the ideal material for longevity and the environment.

Coatings

The George Barnsdale & Sons protection and decoration system has been developed by Akzo Nobel Woodcare, who have become the world leaders in joinery coatings . Their Sentinel Plus Wood Protection programme aims to make wood a more sustainable product by extending the life cycle of timber through high performance coatings systems.

Our windows are coated with Sikkens coating and our coatings warranty is supported by them. With minimum maintenance they will give decades of service with low maintenance. We use a Boron based preservative for our timber windows as it has been proven to be the best material and as it is a natural material it is less likely to cause environmental damage and performs very well with factory finished windows.

Energy Ratings & George Barnsdale & Sons

Once installed, wood is an extremely effective insulating material with very high energy efficiency.

George Barnsdale & Sons were the first in Britain to achieve an 'A rated' timber window and have continued to design windows with the best performance without the need for expensive, unattractive, triple glazed units.

We are proactive in researching thermal ratings for our windows and alongside the British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC) we have recently attained BFRC energy ratings on the Flush Casement, Inward Opening Tilt & Turn & the innovative Fully Reversible Pivot windows.

The ratings give excellent performance of the frames, all attaining a U-value (U f ) of 1.4 W/m 2 K. This allows us to achieve very high performance without the need to use expensive and unattractive triple glazed units. Using our argon filled glazing unit with warm edge spacer technology, we have attained B ratings for the flush casement and tilt & turn window and a C rating for the pivot window.

Minimising Waste

George Barnsdale & Sons have a wood waste disposal systems which means that any off-cuts are burned to warm the factory. Additionally, the wood dust and wood shavings are compressed and sold to minimise the waste.

Local community

We are not only committed to our customers, shareholders and employees-but also to our local community.

Our managing director is the chairman of Improving Donington's `Environment for All' ( IDEA ), which is a project where by local organisations are working together to build a children's park in the area. The aim of this is to help to bring families together and to provide the teenage population with a safe recreational area.

Additionally, five employees at Barnsdales work for the local fire brigade as retained fireman and are regularly called for duty in the local community.

As the summer finally arrives, employees at George Barnsdale are travelling to and from work in style. Taking into consideration today's environmental concerns, a high percentage of the Barnsdale workforce are choosing to cycle to work as can be seen by the bursting bike shed at our Donington premises.
