Acoustic Windows
George Barnsdale has carried out extensive research into the development of sound reducing timber windows.
The type of glass used and the overall sealing of a window are the two main influences on sound reduction.
Generally the greater mass of the glazing and glass with sound deadening properties will perform better but with increased cost.
Normal casement windows are relatively simple to seal for sound reduction, but with care sliding sash windows can also perform very well.
For example the Barnsdale S3 Sliding Sash Window with 8.4mm sound reducing laminated & 8mm float glass has achieved a Weighted Sound Reduction of 37dB.
Reductions of over 40dB can be achieved with a casement window using thicker glass.
