Why are our windows different?
Design & Testing
We design durable features into our windows. Our designs are thoroughly tested including air and water penetration, ironmongery, security, acoustic, end-grain sealing and glazing systems. More Information on design & testing.
Timber
We use clear timber. Normally finger jointed redwood heartwood. This has good durability, has PEFC Chain of Custody and will take the coating system well. See About our Timber for more information.
Sealing Joints
If a joint fails and the end grain is exposed it will draw in water and destroy the window. We are obsessed with avoiding joint failure and sealing the end grain. Our joints are bonded with resorcinol formaldehyde and sealed. Both processes are expensive but essential for long term durability.
Finishes
If the timber remains dry it will last for ever! This is why we have done extensive development with Akzo Nobel, to provide a preservative and painting system that will provide a long term protection with low maintenance. This has included a high quality in-house finishing area, and joining the Sikkens Sentinel Plus Wood Protection Programme which provides on site advice both before and after installation.
Ironmongery
We use the best quality, British made ironmongery. Cheap Far Eastern ironmongery has poor performance and may not last. For more information see window ironmongery options and door ironmongery options.
