Our inward and outward historic timber entrance doors have been developed to retain the original aesthetics, but provide modern performance.

They have a wide range of profiles and glazing options to allow it to match with exsiting windows and there are a wide range of glazing, timber and paint options available, all offering our market leading guarantees.

Our historic timber door provides:

  • A wide range of original profiles and glazing methods to provide an accurate match to existing designs.
  • A range of glazing systems to provide the optimal balance between performance and aesthetics.
  • Engineered timber providing excellent durability, all from certified, sustainable sources.
  • High quality hardware with modern high security locking systems concealed behind original designs.

Our manufacturing process allows us to manufacture almost any style door and frame configuration, allowing you to get the exact product that you require.

However, due to the wide range of options it is often difficult to understand the possibilities and decide on a design. For this reason we have defined a range of door and frame designs that may provide ideas and inspiration.

Door Styles

The following door styles are a range of possibilities. Different designs can be specified and also panels and glazing units can be interchanged as required. There are a wide range of sash bar / astragal bar options available to tailor the appearance further. All rail sizes are variable, so the door proportions can be adjusted as required.

Doorset Layouts

The external timber doors can be combined with fan lights and side lights as required. Fanlights can have opening sashes and side lights can have a fixed or opening sash or be direct glazed to allow more glazed area. The timber front doors can also be matched to our casement window range allowing any design to be coupled to the doorset.

Doorset Layouts

We have a wide range of design options, including glazing type, sash and frame profiles, glazing bars and frame features, allowing you to customise the design to your requirements.

Internally Glazed

Our advanced glazing system, used on our traditional range, is available with different bead profile options. This solution provides the best performance, but some projects may require the externally glazed option due to aesthetic and planning requirements.

We provide a comprehensive range of glazing options which can be customised for specific applications.

Standard Glass Options

We have a wide range of standard glass options to suit any special requirements you may have including:

Toughened Safety Glass: Toughening process increases strength and safety.

Laminated Security Glass: Laminate provides additional security over a toughened unit.

Acoustic Glass: Increases already high level of sound insulation using specialist laminates and thicker glass.

Solar Control Glass: Allows the heat gain from the sun to be matched to the requirements of a building.

Obscure Glass: These are available in a wide range of designs that include textured, etched, sandblasted and painted finishes.

Historic Glass Options

Due to the narrow sashes and sightlines, the specification of a double glazed unit becomes more complicated, requiring special gases to provide thermal insulation and advanced edge seals to space and seal the glass. We have chosen to offer the following glazing systems, based on the suppliers providing proven test data and being established glazing suppliers. This ensures that they meet our performance requirements and will achieve our guarantees (we advise you to be very cautious in considering glazing systems from unproven companies).

Single Glazing

Available in a range of thicknesses, with toughening, security and acoustic laminates, and solar control options available.

Historic Double Glazing

Our standard narrow double glazed unit, using warm edge spacer bar and Krypton gas to provide good thermal insulation. Toughening, security and acoustic laminates, and solar control options are also available on this product.

Pilkington Spacia (Vacuum Glass)

By creating a vacuum between the two panes, this glass is the best performing and also the narrowest. The use of this glass allows most products to meet the thermal performance criteria outlined in the Building Regulations. In order to achieve a vacuum the glass uses micro spacers within the unit and has a plug in the corner (the point where the air is extracted). This has an aesthetic impact, but these are not visible from more than a few meters.

Histoglass

This is a very well regarded narrow glazing solution that has been accepted by many planning departments and will often be accepted without the need to submit a sample, making the process quicker and simpler. The glass is similar to our Historic Double Glazing option, but uses an aluminium spacer with a wide rangem of colour options available. This glass is also available with different glass manufacturing processes including Hand Drawn, Machine Drawn and Cylinder glass allowing it to very accurately the optics created from older glass.

Glazing Method

Both single and double glazing systems can be installed using either putty or beading. Putty is the traditional method and as such provides the closest match to original windows, whereas beading has been introduced to provide longer life (especially on paint adhesion) and better performance.

Historic Glazing MethodWe offer both putty and beading as a method of glazing the above systems with the exception of our standard option (beaded only) and our Histoglass option (putty only).

Internal and external beading have no affect on the paint guarantee. External putty does not have a guarantee on the sash edge where it meets the putty and therefore, this will require a regular maintenance to touch up when midcoat is visible (this is simple to see as the midcoat is a different colour).

Our entrance doors are manufactured from engineered certified Redwood Woodheart® as standard. We also have a range of hardwoods and Accoya modified timber to choose from.

Redwood WoodHeart®

Redwood WoodHeartAs standard all frames and window sashes are manufactured from Redwood WoodHeart®, the heartwood taken from Nordic Scots pine trees (see diagram). By utilising this heartwood, we get very good durability and dimensional stability, as well as very good thermal performance.

The reduced moisture uptake and increased stability of the timber produces a substrate which enhances the coating life span (this is key to a long life window because if the coating remains intact the window will last indefinitely).

In addition it is engineered to be knot free, which along with the aesthetic effect, also prevents resin exudation, which will damage the coating.

The cill on sliding sash windows and the cill extensions on all products (if required) are, due to increased exposure to weathering (both water and UV light), manufactured from FSC sourced hardwood.

Other Options

It is possible to supply our products complete in Redwood WoodHeart® (usually only if a transparent finish is required) and in addition the following four timber options.

Red Grandis

Red Grandis

Red Grandis provides a stable and durable substrate and is supplied as a three ply laminated material for extra stability. It is available in long, clear lengths making it highly suitable for stain finishes where no finger joints are preferred.

European OakEuropean Oak

In the past, high quality windows have been made from European Oak due to its durability. However, it has a tendency to move which can cause failure of the coating system and the insulating glass units. To overcome these problems we use knot free laminated European Oak which has FSC Chain of Custody.

AccoyaAccoya

Accoya is an exceptionally stable modified timber and has the highest durability rating. It provides the ultimate substrate for our coating system allowing us to give a coatings warranty of up to 12 years. Accoya also comes with FSC Chain of Custody.

SapeleSapele

Sapele is a very stable and durable tropical hardwood that is very well suited to joinery manufacture. It’s dark and dense characteristics make it a very attractive timber, well suited to a transparent coating. We source this with FSC certification to ensure it is from sustainable, certified sources.

10 Year Paint Guarantee - No Redecoration RequiredOur advanced coating system has been developed to provide maximum protection to the timber, whilst allowing it to breathe and let its natural characteristics show through.

This allows us to give a 10 year guarantee on paint finish (a 25 year guarantee may also be available – please contact us for more information).

The coating system is vitally important for the longevity of timber windows and doors. It essentially serves three purposes; to prevent UV and visible light damage to the timber surface, to slow down the rate at which moisture is absorbed and released from the timber and to provide an attractive colouring and surface finish to the product.

Opaque Paint

We can provide almost any opaque colour, all we require is a RAL Standard, RAL Design, Natural Colour System (NCS) or British Standard (BS 4800) colour or an actual sample. View our Coating System Guarantee brochure.

Opaque Paint SamplesTranslucent Paint

We can provide almost any translucent colour, all we require is a RAL Standard, RAL Design, Natural Colour System (NCS) or British Standard (BS 4800) colour or an actual sample. View our Coating System Guarantee brochure.

Translucent Paint Samples

Dual Colour

We can provide dual colour windows and doors with a different colour inside to out or frame to sash. This also allows for the frame and sash to have a different dual colour specification if required.
