The coating system is vitally important for the longevity of timber windows and doors and their appearance.

A coating system for timber windows and doors is required to serve three broad purposes:

  • Provide an attractive colouring and surface finish to the product.
  • To prevent UV and visible light damage to the timber surface.
  • To slow down the rate at which moisture is absorbed and released from the timber.

Our advanced coating system has been developed to provide maximum protection to the timber, whilst allowing it to breathe and let its natural characteristics show through. The following illustration shows the detail of the system and the benefits that it provides.

Coating System

Our advanced coating system

P – Preparation:

Softwood is first treated in a boron preservative, penetrating deep into the timber allowing us to give a 30 year guarantee against decay. The natural characteristics of hardwood timbers mean this treatment is not required

1 – Basecoat:

The product is deluged in a basecoat, which penetrates the timber, providing protection against moisture penetration and UV radiation. This also provides a large amount of the colour pigmentation for translucent finishes.

2 – Spray Mid-coat:

We apply a first spray coat with special properties for protecting the timber. As coatings will erode with time, on an opaque system, we spray this mid-coat a different colour to the top coat, making it obvious when a simple re-coating is required.

3 – Spray Top Coat:

On an opaque finish we apply the top coat as the required colour, whereas a translucent system has a second application of the primary spray coat.

This allows us to give a 10 year guarantee (a 25 year guarantee may also be available – please contact us for more information).

Investment in the latest robotic spray technology and flowcoating (a deluge process that ensures coverage in even the most hard to reach areas) has allowed us to provide this system in a cost effective way.

Design Requirements

To ensure that the coating system is allowed to perform to its best a number of design features are required:

  1. Use round edges – coatings will not give sufficient film builds on sharp edges. For the best results all edges should be rounded to a 3mm radius.
  2. Avoid projecting cills and external trims – these are best avoided as they are vulnerable sections of product that are more susceptible to movement which can break down the coating system.
  3. Use internal beading – internally beaded windows and doors ensure that the external face is part of the main profile and as a result is much more stable.

Colour Options

We can provide almost any opaque or translucent colour, all we require is a RAL Standard, RAL Design, Natural Colour System (NCS) or British Standard (BS 4800) colour or an actual sample. View our Coating System Guarantee brochure.
